How to Measure Pasta

How can you measure spaghetti portions easily? Does it seem like you always just grab a random handful of dry noodles and say "eh...this looks good I guess?"

How much pasta in a serving?

A common serving size is around 2 ounces of dry pasta, which yields about 1 cup of cooked pasta.

The most accurate way to measure pasta is to use a scale

We're going to talk about one of the most essential tools in any kitchen: a scale. A good kitchen scale is worth its weight in gold, and let me tell you, it will change your life.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "Why do I need a scale when I've got measuring cups and spoons?" Well, let me ask you this: are you measuring flour or sugar by volume? Because let me tell you, that's not the most accurate way to measure. With a scale, you can get precise measurements every time.

And it's not just for baking, either. You can use a scale for all sorts of things. Want to portion out your meat for the week? Use a scale. Trying to figure out how much pasta to cook? Use a scale. Trust me, it's a game-changer.

I see some of you talking about how you don't need a scale, how you can just eyeball it. And you know what? I get it. I've been cooking for a long time, and I can eyeball a lot of things. But there are some things that just need to be measured precisely. And for those things, a scale is indispensable.

So, if you don't have a scale in your kitchen, I implore you: get one. It doesn't have to be expensive, just make sure it's accurate. And if you already have one, give it some love. It's one of the best investments you can make in your kitchen.

Other methods for measuring pasta

  • Use a tall cup or glass: Some people recommend using a tall cup or glass for measuring pasta portions, specifically for "pasta mise en place". With practice, no scale is necessary.
  • Eyeball it: A package of spaghetti is typically one pound, so one package is 8 servings.
  • Use a spaghetti spoon thingy: Some spaghetti spoon with tines on them have a hole that can be used to portion an ounce of spaghetti. Since a spaghetti serving size is two ounces, 5 ounces for two people is a generous amount. This method may not be precise but can be helpful for ensuring consistent serving sizes.
